Sixers waiting in the wings for elite forward's potential free agency

Paul George has a $48.7 million player option on his contract for next season. The veteran forward is also expected to agree to terms on an extension with the L.A. Clippers. 

However, there has been little reporting on whether those negotiations have begun to take place. As such, other teams around the league are likely keeping an eye on any potential developments.

According to Marc Stein, the Philadelphia 76ers are an 'eager suitor' for George's signature, assuming he hits free agency.

"League sources say that Philadelphia continues to loom as an eager George suitor should he make it onto the open market and give the 76ers their formal opportunity to try to lure him across the country," Stein reported. "The Sixers are said to maintain interest in George despite the widely held presumption that he and Leonard want to keep playing together in their native Southern California."

George, 33, will likely be signing the last big contract of his career. Star talents usually opt out of their player options to pursue longer-term security. 

Injury risks rise as players age, so they seldom take chances with a player option. Signing an extension with the Clippers is the most logical outcome for George, as he would still earn the $48.7 million on his contract for next season. 

Still, there's no denying that George would be a strong fit with Philadelphia. He would provide wing defense, tertiary playmaking and secondary scoring next to Joel Embiid. His off-ball game would ensure Tyrese Maxey continues to thrive and develop. 

The Clippers will be moving into their new stadium next season. George has been a significant part of the team's recent growth. He joined the franchise to help them contend for a championship. 

Unless the Clippers decide not to retain his services, he will unlikely return to the Eastern Conference. The Sixers would be wise to watch his market, while also understanding their chances of acquiring him are slim at best.
