Five potential landing spots for this former touchdown leader

Lifelong Packer, Aaron Jones, is set to hit the open market after being released shortly after the team reached an agreement with running back Josh Jacobs, per Adam Schefter.

Prior to his release, Jones was due $12M in 2024. Now the veteran RB will join a pool of free agents who look to find a new home ahead of the 2024 season.

Jones is coming off of an injury-riddled 2023 campaign where he totaled 656 rushing yards, 233 receiving yards and three total touchdowns — all career lows since becoming a full-time starter in 2019.

The 29-year-old running back can still impact the game and here are five teams he could do that for.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys will be without their back-to-back 1,000-yard rusher, Tony Pollard, and there is no clear-cut backup that could take over.

Jones, a polished receiving back, will presumably step into the starting role where he could lead Dallas' rushing attack and command upwards of 70 targets to finish top-10 in total yards by a running back — much like how Pollard did.

Jones could return to his 2019 self where he led the league in total touchdowns (19) in a Dak Prescott offense that ranked fifth in total offense last season, and one that has topped the league in 2019 and 2021.

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens have been the league's most consistent and lethal rushing team since the arrival of Lamar Jackson — finishing top-3 every season since 2018. However, outside of Jackson, the team hasn't been home to a 1,000-yard rusher since Mark Ingram in 2019. The Ravens backfield, for the most part, has been dominant through committee.

Jones, a three-time 1,000-yard rusher, would seamlessly fit into an offense heavily catered towards the run game and possibly find himself back into double-digit touchdowns.

With no Gus Edwards and no indication of J.K. Dobbins' future, Jones and Jackson have the potential to be the third QB-RB duo to both rush for 1,000 yards in a single season.

Houston Texans

The Houston Texans are another team that has suffered from losing its top running back in free agency.

The Texans have been one of the worst rushing teams since the start of the new decade and an agreement with Jones could quickly turn that around.

Though the 29-year-old RB is tailing the end of his prime, he could take pressure off of rookie sensation, C.J. Stroud and provide a reliable option out the backfield.

Dark Horses: Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings

The Los Angeles Rams could be a team to look out for. A Jones signing could form a feared tandem in the backfield with Kyren Williams. Jones would most likely play second to Williams, a scenery that he's never experienced, but could serve him well as it would manage his wear and tear.

The Minnesota Vikings would be another option for Jones. Alexander Mattison remains a free agent and Jones would step into a vacant role and be one to revive a run game that was once dominated by Dalvin Cook.

Despite his age, Jones remains one of the top running backs in free agency, and with an expected market value of $5.1M a year according to Spotrac, the once NFL touchdown leader could find a destination sooner rather than later.
