Should the Detroit Lions be interested in trading for Bronco's receiver Courtland Sutton?
Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports

There is no doubt that the Detroit Lions need help at receiver. Specifically a big bodied X receiver that can make contested catches. The Lions just don't have that and they just lost the closest thing that they did have to it when Josh Reynolds signed with the Broncos.

Speaking of the Broncos, they have a receiver that fans are absolutely sure is going to become available for a trade in Courtland Sutton. Should the Lions be interested in a trade for him? Well, let's talk about it.

For starters, why is he suddenly available? Because he skipped the start of the Broncos voluntary workouts. While it's something that happens every single year with multiple players per team, people are always quick to rush to the idea that this means the player wants more money or wants out.

That's not always the case. For example, Amon-Ra St. Brown is not at the Lions voluntary workouts right now and nobody thinks he wants to be traded or is holding the Lions up for money. He's already expected to get a massive extension that will make him one of the highest paid receivers in the league this offseason.

Anyways, if Sutton is indeed looking to be traded, should the Lions be interested and what would it cost?

He certainly fits the bill of what this team is looking for a in a receiver. He's 6-foot-4 and has contested catch ability. We've seen what he's capable of over the years. What would this trade likely cost?

Looking back on recent trade trends and the one that we could really work off would be the Jerry Jeudy trade the Broncos just made with the Browns. The Browns traded the Broncos a 2024 fifth-round pick and a 2024 sixth-round pick.

The production is very similar for both guys, but Sutton is clearly the better player here, so he might cost a bit more. Here's the proposal:

Lions get: Courtland Sutton
Broncos get: The 164th pick and a 2025 4th round pick from the Eagles.

I'm sure Broncos fans are going to want more than that, but they're just not going to get it. Sutton is 28-years-old and has a decent sized contract. Teams aren't going to be looking to trade high picks for that. Especially since the market for receivers is down after there were some really bad trades of late. Like the second round pick for Chase Claypool trade. That's not happening again.

Should the Lions do it?

I say no for multiple reasons. The first being that I don't think the Broncos are even interested in trading Sutton. This is more than likely another overreaction about a common thing.

Another reason is that Sutton is 28-years-old and he has a bit of a hefty contract for a player that just isn't putting up the numbers you'd hope you would get from a guy with you're paying $13 million a year to. If he indeed does want more money, the Lions would be on the hook for that when they're about to make St. Brown one of the leagues top paid receivers.

They could just as easily save the picks and draft a much younger receiver and have a guy on a rookie deal. Of course, if the Lions do make this deal, I don't think anyone would complain too much.
